چکیده

The present paper investigates whether Semitic languages impose a rigid triconsonantal structural principle on root-morpheme representation, by examining morphological priming effects obtained with primes consisting of weak roots. For weak roots, the complete three-consonantal structure is not kept in most of their derivations, and only two letters are consistently repeated in all derivations. In a series of masked priming experiments subjects were presented with primes consisting of the weak roots letters which are repeated in all derivations. The results showed that the two consistent letters of weak roots facilitated the recognition of targets derived from these roots. In contrast, any two letters of complete roots did not facilitate the recognition of complete root derivations. The implications of these results to Parallel-Distributed models and to localistrepresentational approaches, are discussed.

Morphological analysis of disrupted morphemes: evidence from Hebrew.

In concatenative languages such as English, the morphemes of a word are linked linearly so that words formed from the same base morpheme also resemble each other along orthographic dimensions. In Hebrew, by contrast, the morphemes of a word can be but are not generally concatenated. Instead, a pattern of vowels is infixed between the consonants of the root morpheme. Consequently, the shared por...

Verbs and nouns are organized and accessed differently in the mental lexicon: evidence from Hebrew.

A masked priming paradigm was used to examine the role of the root and verbal-pattern morphemes in lexical access within the verbal system of Hebrew. Previous research within the nominal system had showed facilitatory effects from masked primes that shared the same root as the target word, but not when the primes shared the word pattern (R. Frost, K. I. Forster, & A. Deutsch, 1997). In contrast...

Word-level morphology: A psycholinguistic perspective on linear formation in Hebrew nominals

Hebrew is a highly synthetic Semitic language, which is well-known for its non-linear root-and-pattern morphology. The current paper discusses a less familiar facet of Hebrew—linear operations relating stems and suffixes. It argues for their central role in Hebrew processing and acquisition, and proposes a systematic distinction between root-and-pattern and stem-and-suffix structures. The paper...

Verb Morphology of Hebrew and Maltese — Towards an Open Source Type Theoretical Resource Grammar in GF

One of the first issues that a programmer must tackle when writing a complete computer program that processes natural language is how to design the morphological component. A typical morphological component should cover three main aspects in a given language: (1) the lexicon, i.e. how morphemes are encoded, (2) orthographic changes, and (3) morphotactic variations. This is in particular challen...

The grammatical morphology of Hebrew-speaking children with specific language impairment: some competing hypotheses.

Many English-speaking children with specific language impairment have unusual difficulty with grammatical morphemes such as past tense and third-person singular verb inflections and function words such as articles. Unfortunately, the source of this difficulty is not yet clear, in part because some of the possible contributing factors are confounded in English. In the present study, alternative ...
